GOLDEN WEDDING

PIONEERS CELEBRATE

Both Mr. and Mrs.. C. H. Raven, Eltham,; who celebrated their, golden wedding recently, are connected with tho pioneering .days of Taranaki, Mr. Haven's parents having been among the earliest arrivals in the province (states the "Taranaki Daily News"). For the past' nine years Mr. and Mrs. Raven have lived at Eltham, after farming for 21 years at Kaikoura, South Island. Born in England 85 years ago, Mr. Raven came to Australia with his parents in 1854. Ho landed in New Zealand in' 1867 after crossing the Ilokitika bar in the Tasmanian Maid, an old gunboat used in the Maori War. The road through Arthur's Pass had jiist been opened, and young Raven set off to walk to Christchurch. After Staying ten months- he went';back to Australia, but in 1874 he returned to New Zealand, and with the exception of several, trips to Australia has resided in. this country ever since. Mr. Raven's first acquaintance with Tarajiaki was in 1880, when he assisted to fell the bush on the line of the railway from Normanby to Eltham. Mrs. Raven was born at Motueka. Her parents were early residents of New Plymouth. Her father, Sergeant Phillip Vercoe, and her mother (nee Ann. Foreman) arrived at. New Plymouth as children with their parents, Mr. Vercoe coming in tho expedition ship Fremantle. Maori hostilities broke out and he took arms under Major Atkinson, being engaged continuously in-tho campaign. Ho removed to Nelson with the refugees and was present at the setting up of guns on Church Hill, which was fortified by the settlers at the time of the Wairau massacre. Mrs. Vercoe, who was born in Kent, was another of the refugees from New Plymouth who was compelled to seek L alʿ^_£L!i iiclsou. ._/"?"' . Œ -,^_ j.

OBITUARY.
OLD TARANAKI RESIDENT. At the advanced age of 85 years a very old resident of Tamaki, Mrs. Elizabeth Smales, died on August 13th. Deceased was the widow of the late Rev. Gideon Smales, one of the early residents of Auckland. For very many years Mrs. Smales had resided at Hampton Park, East Tamaki, where her death took |place.

MR. H M. SMALES,
The death occurred on Thursday of Mr. Herbert Michell Smales, of Hampton Park, East Tamaki, at the age of 45. The deceased was a member of one of the pioneer; m families of the Auckland province, his father,,the late Rev. Gideon Smales, landed at Hokianga from missionary brig Triton in May, 1840. The late Mr. Smales was well known in hunting circles and was highly respected in the district. He was at one time a member of the East Tamaki Road Board. On the death of his father in 1894 he assumed the management of the Hampton Park estate, an area acquired by the Rev. Gideon Smales in 1856, and subsequently developed into one of the most beautiful properties in the district. The late Mr. Smales was unmarried, and is survived his aged mother, one brother, and five sisters. The interment will take place at the St. John's Church, East Tamaki, the burial place being the family vault in which the Rev. Gideon Smales and other members of the family are buried.' The old church was eirected by the Rev. Q. Smales at his own cost, and in the early days served both the Anglican and Wesleyan communities.
