WAIHI DAILY TELEGRAPH, VOLUME XXXV, ISSUE 8863, 9 JANUARY 1936, PAGE 2 - The death of Mr. William Pennell, a well known figure of the old coaching days, occurred at the Thames Hospital this week. Deceased, who had reached the ripe age of 86 years, was born in the Auckland Province and in his youth in his teens he took part in the Maori war, participating in the battle of Rangiriri. At the close of hostilities with the natives he drove the mail coach for a Mr. Carter between Cambridge, Ngaruawahia, and Auckland, and later followed the same occupation between Rotorua and Tauranga, and Tauranga and Paeroa. He was a man of genial disposition and very popular on the road, and one of his proud boasts was that, in spite of floods, shocking roads, and other set-backs, he never lost a mail bag or caused any accident to a passenger under his charge. In his youthful days he rode several races and on one occasion he had a mount in an early Auckland Cup.
