Our NZ Grants are on my husband?s side of the family.
The family was the well known Grant Brothers? carriers in Nelson. They are mentioned in the Cyclopedia of NZ 1897-1902.
The information passed down through the family was that the first of that family to arrive in NZ was James Grant, the surveyor, who survived the ?Wairau Affray? in 1843. His name appears amongst the list of survivors in the Nelson Examiner, 23/12/1843, on Paperspast.
This is the only reference I have found to this James. I haven?t done a lot of work on this part of the family tree for a while.
I did get the marriage certificate of Robert Grant [Carter] & Susannah Bird, hoping to get my next clue, but there was no mention of their parents. The marriage took place on 11/6/1868, at the residence of WM Dalton, Milton St, Nelson.
James Grant, the surveyor, is likely to be Robert?s father, but I have no proof, as yet.
I am presuming that Susannah Bird?s parents were Rueban & Ann Bird, who arrived in Nelson on the Fireshire in 1842.

ANN BIRD
Ann Bird, often remembered as ?the first white woman to step ashore? in Nelson in 1842, wins the prize for business longevity. She inherited a six-year-old butchƯering business when her husband Reuben died in 1850, aged 32, although she may have been involved before his death. Her business became a Nelson landmark. IniƯtially, in 1851, fellow butcher Henry Hargreaves killed the beasts for her. Whether this was out of kindness or for a price, his support certainly helped. She did not advertise often but got free publicity from other businesses that stated they were ?across the street from Mrs Bird?s butcher?s shop?. Her sons joined her in the business but Ann was in charge until her death in 1891 leaving an estate worth £950. Ann?s sons included Thomas, who hanged himself when he was 25 in 1868 after being told he had an incurable heart condition. He left behind his pregnant wife of two years, Harriet, and a one-year-old son. Rather than join the family business, Harriet more conventionally advertised a ?day school for young children? and then a boarding house at her home in the Washington Valley. Four years later she sold up and moved to Melbourne, where she married Edward Wilkinson in 1874. Ann had person sources.4 She immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Fifeshire arriving NZ 1/2/1842 on 26 September 1841.1 She was a butcher, Nelson in 1850.

I've been doing some work lately on descendants of William BELL & Martha DILLON who took their family from Bath in England to New York in 1852.
Martha was the sister of Thomas DILLON who married Eleanor NOWELL at Bath in 1838 who emigrated from Bath to Nelson New Zealand arriving Feb 1842, returned to England late in the 1840s, then re-emigrated to Christchurch New Zealand in 1851. There are loads of descendants in NZ PEDI

Thomas DILLON was born on June 5th 1816 at Bath, Somersetshire, England. In 1838 he married Eleanor NOWELL at St Michaels in Bath. Eleanor, the daighter of Joseph and Maria NOWELL (nee CARNICK) was born c 1817, also at Bath. In September 1841 Thomas and Eleanor along with young daughter Ellen Jane and Eleanor's younger sister Maria NOWELL (born c 1825) emigrated to New Zealand on board the Fifeshire. During the voyage a son Thomas Harford DILLON was born on December 21st 1841, halfway across the Indian Ocean. He had been named after the ships Captain, Harford ARNOLD. In New Zealand Thomas and Eleanor were to have two more sons: Frederick Nelson DILLON born in Nelson in 1844 and Alfred Wellington DILLON born in Wellington in 11th August 1847. Thomas and Eleanor and the family returned to England and later again sailed for New Zealand on board the ship Cornwall, settling at Christchurch where their youngest child, Clara, was born. Thomas died in 1857 at the age of 41 years and in 1863 Eleanor re-married George ARBER. Thanks for the above to Peter Dillon the great, great grandson of Thomas and Eleanor DILLON. Peter has a large amount of research material on the DILLON family on board this ship. SL.
