OBITUARY.
DEATH OF MR JAMES COLEY.
On Monday evening at 23 minutes past 11 o'clock, Mr James Coley passed away at his residence in Coley street, Foxton. The deceased had been ailing for the past nine months, but bore bis afflictions with a true Christian spirit. At the last he was bedridden for many weeks. The deceased was fully conscious at the end and was attended by his sons and daughters. Mr James Coley had reached his 73rd year, and until the last nine months had always enjoyed good health. He leaves a widow, six sons ? Henry, Robert, George, Alfred, Frederick, and Edward who are all married, and four daughters-Mesdames T. Easton, Eilis, Messena, and Arbon. He also has left 56 grandchildren and 8 great-grand-children.
The late James Goley came to the colony in the year 1842 in tho barque St. George and landed at Auckland and first entered into the service of the Rev Mr Fairbain, the Wesleyan Missionary. After a few years he went to Ruapekepeke with horses for the Commisariat Department and after settling down at Onebunga, where he carried on sawing in the bush and from where he sent away one of the first shipments by the brig Hargreaves, he married a Miss Massey, daughter of one of the early military settlers living at Howick. They were married by the Rev Mr Churton. In 1859 he moved to Invercargill and carted goods to the digging. He arrived in Wellington in 1864 where he was contracting and carting and afterwards arrived in Foxton where he carried on a large business in carting. Eight or ten years ago he practically gave up business and devoted bis time to the development of his garden. He was a constant churchman, and took a great interest in the services at All Saints', having for very many years taken to himself the duty of bellringer. He was a member of tbe old Local Board during which time most of the heavy work was done, and where his practical knowledge was found most useful. For many years also the deceased occupied a place in the vestry He was a particularly active and pushing man and was most interested in the progress and development of the district.-.
