Biography
Albert Cook was born in 1863.
1,2 Emigrated to Tonga and set up whaling operations and died there. Married several times in Tonga.
Hi Tony...yes that is correct.....and that is where my grandfather hails from...from the union of Albert and Calo in Tonga..I understand that she was of half tongan descent and half Tahitian...My grand-father was then sent over to Nz from Tonga when he was 12 to get a as I think my great-grandfather put it..." a better education" when his mother Calo Sekie died while in childbirth with their second child. Though I notice on our family tree that there is another child by the name of George mentioned. I am not sure whether at the time a child who had died in childbirth was still mentioned on the family tree or not. I'm not sure of the practice of reporting births at the time. You are correct. Albert's grave is in Tonga. He never returned to NZ. There are differing opinions as to why this was. Our Cook family was the only family that was permitted to hunt whales for the island as a food source.
I am in touch with some family members who were born in Tonga. They now have a facebook page dedicated to reuniting our family as it seems we are all over the globe and Albert had over 20 children as he had many wives and alliances. I have requested information/photos etc via one of our family members but as of yet this information has not been revealed....though they do know of the union of my great-grandfather and Calo Sekei....and of my grand-father..Herbert Joseph Cook, so I am thinking that I might just have to put the request out there for all to see on our family facebook page and someone might be able to shed some light on the whereabouts of our Sekei whanau.
