My gt,gt,gt, Grandfather John Thomas Umbers came to NZ in the early 1830's
I am not sure at this stage whether he came as a whaler,or as a sawyer.I have some details from a letter that was written in 1840 from Kororaeka to the family in England by John's brother William[a 1st mate on a whaling ship]about his visit with John.
John is on record of some land claims,1835,38 & 39 in the Whangaroa region.
He was born in Warickshire in1810
He married Mari Te Wai at Waimate North in1843
They had two daughters, Mary Ann&Caroline[who married Bruno Hamel the photographer]
In 1853 John left NZ for Australia[leaving the daughters behind]
He died in Sydney 1855
I am constantly looking for records of him,I know that he was working as a sawyer for Speakman at Whangaroa around 1840-47.
He might have been working as a seaman at Cloudy Bay in 1832 with his brother William.
His eldest daughter Mary Ann had a child with Michael Tighe. John Thomas Umbers immigrated to to Whangaroa?, Northland, about 1832.1 He emigrated from to Sydney in 1855.1
