5 William Geary Senior was born in Nottingham in 1800, the first and only surviving son of Thomas Geary and Elizabeth nee Haslam. The family were Framework Knitters (FWKS) working on stockings at home. William married Charlotte Dovey in 1824. She came from another family of FWKs. Together they had 4 children Sarah, Elizabeth, William (Eng) and John Dennis. The 2 sons of this marriage later came to NZ as adult men. But in 1831 times were difficult for FWKs , William senior and his father Thomas were out of work, so they tried to steal 2 bags of wheat from a warehouse. They were caught and sent for 7 years transportation. Thomas died on the Hulks 2 years later but William landed in Hobart to complete his sentence. After he was released he became a whaler and by 1840 he was working for Johnny Jones. He sent for his wife and family but Charlotte had died in 1838 and the children were too young to travel alone. Some years later William Senior, met and lived with Etahi Taputai of Nga Mahanga from Taranaki. They founded a family firstly at Otakou and then at Portobello, producing John, Thomas and William Junior. For several years William Senior, and both his English sons and his 3 sons to Etahi, were all living on the Otago Peninsula.
Descendants of all these families are still living on the Otago Peninsula and many relations and connections are spread far and wide.
