William Telford stated that he was a constable at the time of the alleged robbery, and recollected being sent to Lodge's for the gun. Lodge gave him the gun, and he took it to the gaol, where it was identified by Biddell and a native. It belonged to a Native at Kia-warra-warra. ?Cross examined by the prisoner. ? The native said there were cracks on the raJcou (wood.) Mr. Man tell, acting clerk to the Magistrates, was called to prove that the prisoner, when examined before the Bench of Magistrates, admitted having the gun in his possession, but said that he brought it from England ; his father, however, did not know of it. An accident, which we are sorry to say, was attended with loss of life, occurred in the bay on the night of Tuesday last. Mr. Seed, shoemaker, c man named William Telford, and another whose name we have not learnt, were returning from Kia wara-wara in a canoe, when about opposite the Royal George Inn, they were upset. It was dark at the time, and blowing nearly half-a-gale of wind from the N.W. ; their cries, however, fortunately, were heard from the beach, and two boats put off with lanterns, and succeeded in rescuing two of them from a watery grave. Telford, unfortunately lost his life. We have on more than one occasion, had cause to notice the foolhardiness, to say the least, of many persons risking their own lives, and thereby endangering those who may be disposed to help them in their distress, by traversing the harbour in mere shells of canoes in boisterous weather. Some day, perhaps, they will find their cries unheeded. The body of the unfortunate man Telford was found yesterday morning near the spot where he met his untimely fate. Deceased had given his evidence on Tuesday morning, before the Court of Quarter Sessions. William Telford had person sources.
3 He was a Shoemaker in 1841.
1 He immigrated to ENG to NZ on the Lord William Bentinck arriving NZ 19/5/1841 on 5 January 1841.
