John emigrated to New Zealand on the 8th January 1841 on the LORD WILLIAM BENTINCK arriving in Port Nicholson (Wellington) on the 19th May 1841.
John was 17 years old and he was accompanied by his 15 year old sister Harriett.
His future wife Rachel Ann Mudgway arrived 4 weeks later on the Catherine Stewart Forbes as a 12 year year old with her parents and siblings
He married Rachel when he was about 24 and she was 17 They had 8 children - all born in Wellington.
They settled in Tawa Flat, Porirua Road on 29 acres of bushland. - There is a 'Wilmshurst Place' named after them in Tawa.
In 1862 they moved into Johnsonville where John built a pit-sawn house for them.
He also owned land in the Porirua Road area.
He suffered in later years from rheumatics all over his body.
