OBITUARY.
MR. THOMAS W, DEACON. At the advanced age of 95 yeare, Mr. Thomas Deacon, one of the oldest residents in the Auckland district, died euddenly at Riverhead last night. He was a native of Devonshire, and joined the Royal Navy at a very early age. He came to Auckland in H.M.3. Calliope as far back as 1843, then commanded by Captain Edward Stanley. During Heke'e war the Calliope was stationed at Bay of Islands. Afterwards Mr. Deacon was on the Calliope at Wellington when the famous chief, Te Rauparaha, was a prisoner on board. Getting his discharge, Mr. Deacon joined a barque running to Hokianga to load spars for the British Navy. A passenger by the same vessel was the late Sir John Logan Campbell. Returning to Auckland, Mr. Deacon left the sea, and after wandering round the country for some time, finally settled at Riverhead, and built a store, and later the hotel at Riverhead. The license of that hotel is probably a record for the Dominion, ac it was held without a break by Mr. Deacon for G5 years. In the early days Riverhead was the outlet for the trade from the Kaipara, timber being brought overland from Riverhead, and the return cargo across the isthmus was carried by bullock drays. Mr. Deacon ran a boat between Rivorhead and Auckland at that time, but later the trade was carried by Captain Casey's steamers. Mr. Deacon married the widow of Captain Ellis, who still survives her husband, although a little more advanced in years. I'here is a family of two sons and five daughters, come forty grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mr. Deacon was a wonderfully well-preserved man for his years, and attended to his business up to a fortnight ago. when failing strength necessitated the aped man taking to hie bed. As he had previously had a seizure, his sudden death is not unexpected. Thomas William Deacon immigrated to arrived Auckland 1843 on the Calliope in 1843 not in SL
JGOC has arrived Auckland 1841 on Slains castle.
