DEATH OF MR. JOHN BATGER. ?At his residence at Mt. Eden passed away last evening one of Auckland's very early colonists in Mr. John Batger. Born in Ixmdon in 1836, Mr. Batger left England by the Joseph Fletcher, and landed in Auckland on 31st August, 1852. His original intention was to settle in Taranaki, with his uncle, who accompanied him, but they took up land in Whangarei. There they resided fur about a year, and left there in June, 1853, and, after a journey lasting a week, readied Auckland, where he took up a situation with Messrs. J. A. (iilfillan and Co., with whom he Htayed unti dissolution of the firm, In ISSB he took a keen interest in volunteering, and assisted in organising the first company of rifle volunteers, of which he ultimately became the captain of the City Company, and on the outbreak of the Taranaki war the volunteer companies did garrison duty, and later on, when they volunteered for active service beyond the Auckland district, were engaged in escort duty, and saw a considerable amount, of service in the Auckland district. Later on lie and the late Edward Wayte joined partnership as hooksellers and publishers. The partnership was dissolved *a few years later, on his starting business as a merchant and commission agent, a 'business which he followed for a number of years. When the Auckland Permanent Cooperative Building 'Society was formed in 1872 he was appointed secretary, holding oflice until the society's liquidation. In the same year the Auckland Freight Company was formed, and he wan appointed secretary. On the amalgamation of this company with the New Zealand Shipping Co., he became the local manager in Auckland and retained this position until his resignation in 1885. in ISB2 he was offered and accepted the secretaryship
