TAKAKA.
On the 28th December, a Coroner's inquest was held at the Takaka Inn, upon the body of an old well known digger, formerly of the "Island Party," Slate River, Collingwood, but latterly of the Anatoki.named Raymond Robert Lampert, alias William Stevens, but better known by the name of " the Colonel," who committed suicide by suspending himself from a rafter by the neck, in a miserable cottage the property of his father-in-law, Thomas Edward Plummer, whose daughter he married some 18 months ago. It appears that the deceased was 35 years her senior* consequently, with her bad conduct, they did not live very happily together. He having been some time out of employment left the Valley about nine months ago, and returned ten weeks back, calling on his father-in-law to see his wife. It seems from a statement made before the Coroner by Plummer, that he ordered "the Colonel" off his premises. He left accordingly for Collingwood and West Wanganui, at which places he has been mining for gold without success, but got involved in difficulties for supplies, &c. He retnrned on the 26th ult. from Collingwood, and learnt on his way hither that his wife wa9 in company with her paramour, a native chief, named Mason. He arrived at his old domicile about four o'clock pra,, miserably clad in rags, much excited and dejected, and found an old man named Gilbert Allen at the cottage. He requested Allen to go and inform his father-in-law th-it he wished to see him, he living four miles up the country. Allen after a little time took his departure, leaving " the Colonel" writing at a table. He returned the following morning with Plummer, and on opening the cottage door discovered the body as already described, and the following letter in " the Colonel's" handwriting upon the table :? " Susan, ? As you have turned out a? ? I shall this night make away with myself ; and the Lord have mercy on my soul. " Your affectionate husband, " R. R. Lampert. " P.S.? I hope you will be kinder to those you are living with than me. I blame your father as well as you. Good-bye. God bless you." The jury returned the following verdict :*? " The deceased Raymond Robert Lampert, alias William Stevens, better known as ' the Colonel,' hanged himself while in a state of excitement brought on by the misconduct and ill-usage of his wife Susan Lampert." The deceased was about 57 years old, and
his wife 22. He was buried by the Provincial Government, having no property ; Plummer refusing to bear any of the funeral expenses, or to cleanse the body, which vf as clothed in rags and covered in vermin ; nor did any of the family appear at the place of interment. Since penning the foregoing I hare seen her marriage certificate, she having this day (January 4) been married to the native chief Mason at the Registrar's office, Motupipi. The inhabitants have been in a state of excitement and indignation. They have discoursed rough music to her, i.e., cattle bells, milk dishes, tin kettles, accompanied with numerous hootings and yells. It is reported that the Maori will take her to Taranaki in a few days.? Correspondent Nelson Colonist.
