MRS. E. KNUCKEY, TIKORANGI
The death occurred at Tikorangi yesterday of Mrs Ellen Knuckey, a member of one of the first Taranaki families, aged 82. Mrs Knuckey was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Knuckey, who predeceased her a few years ago. Both Mr and Mrs. Knuckey were born at New Plymouth and were well known pioneers. Mrs Knuckey was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Richard Cock. Her father arrived at New Plymouth by the Regina in 1841, While her mother, who was Miss Ellen Julian before her marriage, arrived by the Blenheim in November, 1842. Mrs Knuckey was born at New Plymouth, at the old Mt. Eliot pilot station. She married Mr. Sam Knuckey,, whose parents, Nicholas and Zenobia Knuckey, arrived by the Essex in January, 1843. Mr. Sam Knuckey played his part in the later Maori War period from 1863. He was a member or the No. 2 (Bushranging.) Company, and at the cessation ot hostilities was granted land at Tikorangi. There he farmed for the greater part of his life and, with his brotherin-law, Mr John Foreman, became one of the district?s leading farmers. He was a large shareholder of Native lands in the Waihi Block, and retired from farming some years ago. Mrs Knuckey had been in bad health for some time. Mr. R Cock (New Plymouth) is her only surviving brother, while her sisters are Mrs W. J. Foreman (New Plymouth), Mrs Creagmile (Auckland) and Mrs R. J. Collins, wife of the late Comptroller General, Colonel Collins (Wellington). Of fourteen children the following are still living: William (Waitara), Lewis (Waitara), Richard (Eltham), Mrs. C. Jury (New Plymouth), Mrs. G. Foreman (Tikorangi), Mrs C. Sarten (Tikorangi), Mrs F. Sarten (Tikorangi). Mrs A. Jupp (Tikorangi) and Mrs S George (Waitara).
