MR. WILLIAM BERKETT.
Tho death occurred on -Sept. I.9th of Mr William Berkett, of Hope. It was in 1842 that he arrived in Now Zealand, and a little later he took up laud at Hope, which he had to clear of fern, tutu arid flax before he nouid turn ifc to account, and after planting potatoes, he had to dig up tho sets for food, supplies failing for the tinio. Undaunted by his early difliculties, however, ho secured a position of comfort, and hin genial kindly nature gained for him the esteem of his neighbours. Some two and a half years ago ho lost his helpmeetr, and after over sixty years' residence in the one locality, he, too, has joinot] the great majority. He leaves fiur sons and five daughters, the sons being Mr H. Berkett, of Hope: Mr W. Berkettt, of Palmerston Ncrth; Mr Thos. Berkett, of Patea; and Mr Chas. Berkett, of Waverley; while the daughters are Mrs James, of Ahaura: Mrs E. Jessopy of Hope: Mrs P. Cross, of Nelson: Mrs C. Schroeder, of Redwood's Valley : and Mrs C. Frost, of Midhurst, Taranaki. The deceased also left 42 grand children, and 20 great grandchildren to mourn his loss. William Berkett immigrated to to Nelson in 1842 ship unknown CHGR.
