IN MEMORIAM.
On Saturday morning last, at a good ripe age, there passed away from our midst one ot Nelson's earliest pioneer settlers, Charles Best, who breathed his last in his own home, at Appleby, surrounded by hia Borrowing family. Mr Best arrived hero in the Sir Charles Forbes in August, 1842, bringing with him his wife, and an only son (who was unfortunately drowned in the river near MiBest's some years later). Being a man of indomitable courage and immense strength, he, very soon after landing, started for the country to carve out a home in the wilds. His first choice was at the Moutere, and while living in that locality he thought nothing of loading himself with his produce and walking into Nelson, and back home again the same day. However, apparently the land there did not suit him, so he very soon removed to Appleby, where he has resided ever since, and where ho wrested from its wild state Ihe beautiful home and one of the best farms in the Waimeas. Boing a large-hearted man, he was ever ready to relieve in sickness or distress, and was a true Forester in every sense of tho word, the bond of obligation being to him as the dictate of his heart. We know of many who have experienced his kindness, and werejvll gathered together that were proud to call him friend, their name would be legion The old gentleman, or "governor " as he was familiarly called, was very unpretentious, but yet commanded respect and widespread influence. He was very fond of the Old Country, its ways and customs, and a man of a vast depth of feeling. It was a real pleasure to see his face at Christmas time, when his family used to muster in force to spend their Christmas Day with him; He always liked them t:> gather round hira at that time, and mauy a silent tear dropped from his eyes when lie thought of those that were absent from his festive table. At the Jubilee of the Province he managed to get all his children and grandchildren, to the tune of 57, gathered together at the old spot, and ho had the family group photographed. Our worthy friend was no politician, though a very keen observer ; of good sound sense and thoroughly practical, a man in every sense of the word, whose advice was often sought, and who was held in high esteem by all classes of people throughout the Colony. Mr Best leaves five sons and two daughters, who will have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends in their aad bereavement. The funeral leaves his late residence at half past two this afternoon for the Appleby Churchyard. Charles Best had person sources.
