Our NZ Grants are on my husband?s side of the family.
The family was the well known Grant Brothers? carriers in Nelson. They are mentioned in the Cyclopedia of NZ 1897-1902.
The information passed down through the family was that the first of that family to arrive in NZ was James Grant, the surveyor, who survived the ?Wairau Affray? in 1843. His name appears amongst the list of survivors in the Nelson Examiner, 23/12/1843, on Paperspast.
This is the only reference I have found to this James. I haven?t done a lot of work on this part of the family tree for a while.
I did get the marriage certificate of Robert Grant [Carter] & Susannah Bird, hoping to get my next clue, but there was no mention of their parents. The marriage took place on 11/6/1868, at the residence of WM Dalton, Milton St, Nelson.
James Grant, the surveyor, is likely to be Robert?s father, but I have no proof, as yet.
I am presuming that Susannah Bird?s parents were Rueban & Ann Bird, who arrived in Nelson on the Fireshire in 1842.
