GEORGE DUPPA. In the English telegrams we publish to day is announced the death of one whose name was in the olden days familiar as a household word in Nelson. Mr Duppa came to Wellington in 1840 in the ship Oriental, which gave its name to the Bay where for a little over a year he lived. Early in 1842 he came over to Nelson and established himself on the farm known as Allington on the right bank of the Wairoa River, being a contemporary of Mr Kerr senior, Mr Tytler, of Waimea West, and others, tbe pioneer farmers of the Waimea. The same year he went up to New South Wales and brought from there the first importation of cattle to Nelson, and splendid beasts they were, the well known " bow and arrow " brand being muoh sought aftor for many years afterwards After a short time, and while sill carrying on tho Allington farm, he took up country in tho Upper War-i'i, where he started dairying, and in tho Upper Motueka Valley, where ho commenced sheep forming, " Gordon'd Knob" taking its name from one of his shepherds, In 1847, when the Wairau waa open for settlement, he took up the Biroh Hill run in the Wairau Valley, and drove sheep through the Big Bush and placed them on it. Subsequently ha sold the run to Mr Schroder, and purchased the St. Leooard'a run in the Amuri, whioh in 1862 he sold for £150,000, and two years later returned to England, where ho has ever einco resided at Holingbourne House in Kent, the family eetite. He married Miss Miles, a relative of Sir Philip Miles, of the well known firm of Miles & Co, merchant?, of Bristol and London, and by her had a small family. Mr Duppa was always a great sportsman, end was the owner of the famous horse II Barbiere, bred by Mr Thompson, the first ResiI dent Magistrate of Nelson, and who was killed in the Wairau massacre. He rods in tho first race that was ever run in Nelson, the course being from Selwyn Place at the baok of Messrs Solanders and Go's store, up towards the gaol, across the back of the Churoh Hill into Examiner street, round the western side of the Hill, then aoross Trafalgar street, and back to the starting point. On his return to England he entered heart and soul into yachting, and beoame the owner of the two then famous yachts Alarm and Lulworth, whioh he purchased from Mr Weld, of Lulworth Castle, near Weymouth, in Dorsetshire. Mr Duppa, at the time of his death, was about 68 years of age. William Elsdon

Biography

William Elsdon was born in 1815.1 He died on 25 August 1840, at age ~25, in Wellington Harbour, Wellington, NZ, drowned when boat overturned RP.2
Mass drowning, 9 settlers, Port Nicholson, 25th August 1840: (NZETC: Early Wellington):
Shortly after this (25th August, 1840), a fatal accident occurred at Pito-one, when a boat party of twelve persons were within a hundred yards of the beach. The boat was upset, and though they were in less than seven feet of water, only three survived the accident.
These were Mr. Francis Bradey, Mr. Fowler and the steersman. Those drowned were Messrs. J. Pierce; W. Elsdon; R. Hight; Lancaster; Josiah Tucker; Martin, a sailor belonging to the boat and lately of the ?Jewess?; Griffin, late steward of the ?Cuba; Rogers, a thatcher; and a person known as ?Colonial Bill.?
