Thomas JOYCE. Reputed to have been born in Ireland. He married Keti Te Hei POUNAMU. They lived in the north, possibly the Hokianga. One of their sons was Thomas Edward JOYCE born 1832. I have a lot about the son but nothing about the father.

Thomas (Lieut R N) McDONNELL was born in 1788 in County Antrim, Ireland.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22 He and Anna Patterson were married on 11 January 1834 in St Marleybone, MDDSX, ENG, age 46 wiki.23 He died on 13 September 1864, at age ~76, in Onehunga, Auckland, NZ, from fall from horse.2,24

Thomas entered the Royal Navy in 1804 and had a colourful career.[1] [2] He saw action: against slavers in West Africa; in Europe, West Indies and took part in a blockade of New York.
He was at Sydney, Australia in the late 1820's and came to NZ in 1831. He established a timber-trading business in Horeke on the Hokianga Harbour.
He bought large amounts of land at Hokianga; owned two ships; and employed many men.
He held the office of Co-Resident of New Zealand (with James Busby). His highest rank was a captain in the Royal Navy.
He died in Onehunga on 13 September 1864, aged 75, from the effects of a fall from his horse and he was buried in Symonds Street Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.[3] Thomas's estate passed probate in 1864 in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. Thomas (Lieut R N) McDONNELL was a trader, shipbuilder and sawmiller in 1831.2 He immigrated to Sydney to Horeke, Hokianga, NZ on the Sir George Murray, on 10 April 1831 ESR has 1829.2,15 He was a merchant in 1846.9

William Lewis (whaler) had 3 known wives. 1/Erina Wharekiri 2/Mihi Rautahi 3/Te Hirata. Erina & Mihi were sisters, their parents are Murataha & Kino, Erina had Charlotte who is the eldest, Charlotte marries John Torr and have 17 issue. Mihi had Archibald Lewis(1842-1940)who married Jane Richardson who had 11 issue. I have no known issue for Te Hirata wife 3

William Lewis was Captain of the Ketch Taraipine (various spellings), which was last seen off Young Nicks Head between Waoira and Poverty Bay in May 1867 before being lost at sea in a gale. This is documented in the probate documents - uploaded as photos. He was captain of the Warren (whaling ship) from Warren, Rhode Island. I have traced the voyage to New Zealand using US newspaper reports. There is no doubt that William Lewis, my great-great-great-grandfather, was master of the Warren, but he was probably George William Lewis, born in Fayal - a Portuguese Island in the north Atlantic Ocean, as per insurance documents for the Warren. He was not born in Texas as most family trees state. The insurance document states he was married to Eliza Smith. The Warren belonged to Joseph Smith and Co. The Warren has a full payload of oil. Some sources say he abandoned his ship, while other sources suggest that he was left without crew and supplies. I wonder if he was ever paid. I will upload a photo of the journey of the Warren from Warren RI to NZ

I have researched New Zealand Newspapers from 1840 to 1890.
There are several "Captain Lewis" mentioned in News reporting. There are Captains of large ships that move between N.Z. and United Kingdom, others mentioned in various regions of the world, and others in regions of New Zealand, reported in assorted N.Z. Newspapers. Concentrating on the east Coast of New Zealand particularly Wairoa and Opotoki. 1866: Various mentions of the Schooner "Agnes Donald" "....New Zealand Herald, Volume XXIII, Issue 7763, 8 October 1886, Page 4..... The schooner Agnes Donald goes hence to Whangarei. Captain Lewis who has fully recovered from his late severe illness, has again resumed charge of his vessel......"
1867: "...Wellington Independent, Volume XXI, Issue 2389, 17 July 1866, Page 4..." Refers to a Cutter "Sea Belle" which struck bad weather after leaving Opotoki on 24 June 1866. The "Captain Lewis" was wshed overboard and drowned. His body was not recovered. There are various mentions of this Cutter trading on the East Coat N.Z.
"....Hawke's Bay Times, Volume IX, Issue 468, 8 April 1867, Page 2 The Taraipine.-We very much fear that something has befallen the ketch Taraipine, which left Wairoa for Poverty Bay about six weeks ago, i having on board 13 souls, 9 of whom were natives, Among the Europeans were Mr James, Campbell -Mahia pilot and his wife. Mr Campbell is known to have taken with hail on board the vessel a sheep dog, the body of which is alleged to have been picked on the beach at Turanganui-leaving little doubt as to the fate of the unfortunate little craft and all her living freight....."
Now in 1888: "....Auckland Star, Volume XIX, Issue 83, 9 April 1888, Page 8 Captain Lewis, of the schooner Agnes Donald, which arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, states that on the 25th ultimo, when off Cook's.......etc" (My Comment: In 1886 he was reported ill while in charge of this boat..)
"......Daily Telegraph (Napier), Issue 5407, 21 December 1888, Page 2 PORT OF NAPIER ARRIVALS December. 20-Ahuriri, s.s., from Blackhead and Ponrerere. Kinross and Co., agents. Mariner, schooner, Captain Lewis, from Auckland....."
The mention of the "Taraipine". may be be the most pertinant to William Lewis. Its a shame the News don't use a first name or initial. It is suggested that he had brothers: were any of these "Captain Lewis" his brothers??? Mentioned in the main page narrative. William (Captain) (George) Lewis immigrated to arrived 1838 Cloudy bay as Captain of US Whaler "Warren" in 1837.5 He was an Operated whaling station on Kapiti Island in 1839.6,7 He was an Operated whaling station Wairoa in 1848.5

John Murray was a sheep farmer 1845 ON.5 Business man who in 1842 entered into a business agreement with Robert FYFFE (see Alexander Robert FYFE) and others to buy and operate a whaling station.(Kaikoura)
1847 living Otago EOL. He was a whaler Otago, Purakanui, Taieri in 1838.6 He immigrated to to Port Chalmers about 1839.2 He was an operated whaling station, Kaikoura in 1842.5,7
