"I stumbled across a page that lead me back to your homepage the page was on George Adam Kissling - he was my great great great grandfather and I have family tree information on all his sons
Another branch of my family is William Cook who was put off a whaler in bay of islands as I understand it because he was sick he married a local maori girl Tiraha - related to Tamiti waka nene - they had numerous children in new zealand the first one we have a recorded birth date for was their 4th child in 1825 so certainly date pre 1846 am not sure if any of this is of interest to your database ?
also I was wondering if you had any other information on george adam kissling - we have quite a full picture of him and his descendants but you never know where another little piece of information will come from.
I thank you for reading my email and please let me know if any of my information is relevant to your data base
thanks again

Biography

Charles Knight was born in 1808 in Rye, SUSSEX, ENG.1,2,3,4 He and Caroline Symes were married on 6 March 1844 in Adelaide, SA, AUS.1 He died on 3 September 1891, at age ~83, in Wellington Tce, Wellington, NZ.1,4 He was buried in September 1891 in Bolton St. Cemetery, Wellington.1
Charles Knight was a doctor, public servant, botanist.1 If it is of assistance to you here is a brief outline of Charles Knight and his family.
The professional biographers have got it pretty right but here is some family info for you which I don't think is general knowledge.

Charles Knight had two brothers James; William and a sister Elizabeth - as well as a step brother and sister (Loisa and Thomas Godfrey), all where born in Rye in Sussex. All emigrated to Australia. Charles Knight went on to NZ from SA. In the early 1850 Charles's Brother James went to the Ballarat Goldfields and opened a number of hotels. Two other miners who started businesses near the hotel were James Prendergast (a young lawyer) and Julius Vogel (a storekeeper).

They left Ballarat about the time of the Eureka uprising and went to the Otago gold fields.

James Prendergast later became NZ Attorney General, and Julius Vogel Post Master General while Charles was by this time Auditor General of NZ.

Charles's family (whom I am researching) always referred to themselves as nieces and nephews of Prendergast.

James Prendergast later became Sir James Prendergast and was at one time the Administrator of NZ, and probably one of it's wealthiest citizens. I guess everybody wanted to be part of his family as he had no children! In our family tree nearly every Knight in NZ, both male and female adopted the name "Prendergast Knight", and going by there success in life and business it did them no harm.

At roughly the same time Charles Knight's brother William was Auditor General in Western Australia and a Director of the Bank of Western Australia.

His sister Elizabeth was Governess to the family of Lt Governor of WA James Stirling

A son of Charles Knight, Charles Godfrey Charles Knight, and his son Charles Prendergast Knight were pretty well known in New Zealand. They were involved in Insurance and Mining
and the NZ Woollen Mills.

I'm no historian but the family records I hold seem to suggest that my outline above is fairly accurate one.But I believe there is a lot more !
