FATALITY AT PAHAUTANUI
A WELL-KNOWN SETTLER DROWNED. Information was brought into town this morning by Constable Baskiville, of Pahantanui, of tho death by drowning of Mr. William Jones, sonr., a well-known settler of Pohautanui. Tho dsceascd lived with his son-in-law, Mr. Alfrod Egguldeu, farmer, and about noon yesterday took a ladder intending to cut down a quantity of gorse which overhung tho edgo of a creek running through the property. Tho banks of tho creek are steep, so that a ladder was nocessary to get at the furzo. As he did not return homo by dusk his son-in-law bocamo anxious, and took a lantern for the purposo of searching for him. Ho followed along tho creek, and evontually found Mr. Joneß lying faco downwards at tho bottom of tho creek, quite doad. Tho ladder was oloso by, resting against the side of the bank, and near to it a quantity of freshly-cut gorse. A slash-hook which the deceased had boon using was found in tho creek. In tho opinion of tho constable the deceased fell from the ladder, and in falling struck against some sharp stonos protruding from the bed of the creek. This theory is borne ont by the fact that the faco and head of tho docoasod are cut in several places. Thoro was a ont about an inch in lontjth on the templo,and another about two inches long on tho crown of the head. The body was romoved >j some neighbours to tho house, where an inquest will bo held by tho'Coroner at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. The deceased leaves a largo family of sons and daughters, most of whom aro engaged in farming pursuits in tho distriot. It is a singular coincidence that about four years ago Mrs. Jones, wife of tho deceasod, was drowned in the samo creok. The late Mr. Jones was about 72 yoars of age, but was accustomed to potter abont tho farm, doing odd jobs. The news has been received with genuine regret by tho residents of Pahautanni, whero tho deceased was very well known. Tho funoral will leavo tho doooascd's lato residence for tho local cemetery to-morrow afternoon.
