George Rich was born in 1797 in SOM, ENG.1 He died in 1862, at age ~65, in on board steamer Ellora.2

Rich, George, 1797-1862

A Somersetshire farmer who bought to New Zealand long-woolled sheep and Ayrshire cattle and later merinos. He arrived on the 'Chelydra' in 1840 with his son Francis Dyer Rich (1828-1901) and bought a portion of Clendon's grant at Manurewa. He went into partnership with his son at Mount Eden, breeding sheep and selling them in Australia. Wrote to Donald McLean from Turanga between Feb 1851-Jun 1852, from Geelong in Dec 1852 and Feb 1853, and an undated letter from London. [DNZB / Scholefield]. George Rich immigrated to arrived Auckland 17 feb 1841 on the Chelydra in 1841.1
