I am sharing a story handed down by my great grandmother Raiha Poharama, shown is this picture. She was born about 1827 to Rangihurua Nikau (from Kawhia) and and John Thompson an African/American whaler/sealer, they ended up living on the Kaikoura coast, after her mother was made to marry John Thompson.
Raiha was 3 years old when her mother hid her in the bushes from the attacks on Ngai Tahu in Kaikoura circa 1829. Raiha?s mother and parents - Tuhere and Tohua Nikau accompanied the Heke from Kawhia to Kapiti Island with Te Rauparaha.
Raiha and Joshua had one daughter, Makareta Thompson (known as black Maggie)and she married a Edward McNamara and they lived at Waipapa bay, and worked in the whaling station. Makareta and Edward had a daughter Hana and she married James Te Apo Cootes (jnr) .
Both John Thompson and Joshua Miller drowned in a boat accident in 1861. Raiha remarried Ngai Tahu Poharama Wahaaruhe from where I descend and they lived at both Waipapa bay and Mangamaunu.
