See book William Stewart by JO C ROSS JOCR
The author has extensively researched many sources and concluded that there were two William STEWARTS who were involved in early NZ and many researchers and historians have confused these two.
The first William STEWART was born in Scotland in 1776, joined the Royal Navy in 1793, deserted in 1797, emigrated to Port Jackson 1801and became involved in sealing. He left Australia 1820 and went to South America. He later returned to NZ and made false claims that he was the William Stewart who had produced the charts and after whom the island was named.
The second William STEWART was responsible for drawing the first detailed chart of Stewart Island and the Island was named after him. This William STEWART arrived in Port Jackson about october 1806. He was employed as Captain of the Elizabeth and later Chief Officer of the sealer, the Pegasus (1809) which returned to England august 1810. William STEWART's charts were later published.
