CORONERS INQUESTS.
An Inquest was held on Monday last, at the Police Office, before John Johnson, Esq, M. D., (Coroner,) and a highly respectable jury to inquire into the cause of the death of William Mason, a youth about nine years of age, (son of our respected townsman Mr. Wm, Mason, who it appeared had left his home on Saturday afternoon, and was found drowned in a well of water near the site of the new Church, early on Sunday Morning. The Jury were duly sworn, and after viewing the body of the deceased, the following witnesses were called, Thomas Paton, deposed, that he saw the deceased alive on Saturday morning about 8 o'clock, the boy was missing on Saturday afternoon about 5 o'clock?at 9 o clock Mr. Mason and himself went in search, but without success. On Sunday morning they again resumed their search when he, witness, found the body in a hole about four feet deep full of water, near where the Church is to be erected * As the case was so clear to the jury, they immediately returned a verdict of? Found drowned. The jury after giving their verdict expressed their astonishment that the authorities should allow such dangerous holes to remain opened without beiug properly fenced round. William Mason immigrated to arrived Bay of Islands from Sydney 17 mar 1840 in 1840.1

George Stubbs was a whaler, trader, Waikanae 1830'S.3,1 A Sydney whaler and trader. Stubbs married Metapere Te Waipunaahau to whom he had two children Wi Parata and Hemi Matenga. Stubbs died about 1838 while fasted to a whale off Pukerua (Kapiti) with a crew of 6 or 7. The bodies were later recovered and buried. National Library.
