"He came to NZ on the Herald with Hobson in 1840. Was present at Treaty signing, travelled with it (said to have with Capt. Nias of the Herald added a piece of parchment to the bottom when there was no more room for signatures) and returned to Sydney in March 1840 before bringing his family back to Kororareka and then moving to Auckland when the capital was moved. First Colonial Treasurer, not apparently terribly competent, Director of the New Zealand Banking Company.
Returned to Australia, exact date not found. Before his death he was Secretary and Treasurer to the Ballan Shire Council in Victoria, AUS.
One child's obituary suggests he went on cruise with father, another that he went to the California goldfields, maybe father went too.
Have tracked the children who came to NZ on the Chelydra, see attached. Only 2 made their lives in NZ. George Sisson and Charles Edward. George Sisson was employed in 1841 in the Colonial Secretary's office, clerk to Governor Fitzroy, travelled the country over land claims, became a magistrate, Under Secretary of??
Various websites have differing information and I have found no documentation of him using Ashley as a second name as multiple family trees suggest.

Paperspast has court case of devious dealings over land Queen v Cooper. My first impression is that he used govt moneys to purchase then when it was discovered had to sell up to pay it back as he had onsold but not yet received the monies. St Georges Bay in Akld was Coopers Bay and was named after him. He lived and developed "allotments" there and in other parts of Auckland and then was forced to sell, see above. Emily Lane named after his wife Emily nee Buck. Was father of George Sisson Cooper and others.
