Campbell Island was discovered in 1810 as the result of a search for new islands where unmolested seal herds might exist. The discoverer was Captain F. Hassclbourgh, in the brig Perseverance, representing Campbell and Company, of Sydney. After returning to Stewart Island to report his discovery to his principals and to pick up men and stores. Captain Hasselbourgh returned to Campbell Island, and soon afterwards he was accidentally drowned. On November 4, 1810. he went down Perseverance Harbour to visit a gang of men he had working near the entrance, and his small boat was capsized in a sudden squall. At the time he was accompanied by Elizabeth Parr, of the Norfolk Island penal settlement, and three men and a boy. Apart from the captain, another man and Miss Parr were drowned and only her body was recovered. Frederick (HAZELBURGH) Hasselbourg was a master of Perserverance in 1810.1
