The death is announced of another old colonist of 53 years' standing, in the person of Mrs Honoria Oakes, who, together with her husband and five children, arrived in Hanraki Gulf early in 1840 in company with Dr. Davis' family and late Sir Donald McLean. Mr John Oakes (a correspondent writes) was drowned with Mr John Scott in sight of Kawau Island on 26th August, 1847, and left considerable property at the Thames, Lucas' Greek and Ponsonby. Mrs Oakes had other properties in her own right. MrsOakes never left the colony, but was away at Christchurch from 1863 to 1867 returning to find herself impoverished by the ruthles hand of might against right. Her kindness of heart and charity to sick and poor were well known. She fed the hungry, clothed the naked, housed the houseless many times when Auckland was a city of mud and shanties. Later on her house was a house of hospitality, Poor woman ! when she found herself without a home, no wonder she lost her head. Mrs Oakes loaves three sons-'Captain J. P. Oakes (in Sydney), Thomas Oakes, Charles A. Oakes (Christchurch), the only daughter being Mrs Lundon. PPA Auckland Star, Volume XXIV, Issue 149, 26 June 1893.
