She and her two brothers were orphaned when she was still in her middle teens.
Was an heiress, her father willed her a share in his estate but as she was a minor she was appointed a Ward in Chancery. To protect her from a fortune-hunting husband who might dissipate her capital, her legacy was vested in her future children, so only the interest was for her use.
Married at Government House aged 17 years to William Young on Tuesday , 22nd July, 1841. As reported in The New Zealand Herald and Auckland Gazette. His first wife.
When married they first lived in a rented five roomed cottage in Princes Street evident in Police Census book 1841 Wm Young Esq. with six males and two females.in 1842 it was two males (one under the age of two years) and two females (one a domestic servant). All C of E.
Eliza Hargreaves arrived in Auckland from Russell on the 'Chelydra', 1840 with Rev William J F Churton and his family and also on board were James Coates and William Young.
Died at the age of 22 in 21st April 1845 after being married for five years of a long and painful illness, possibly tuberculosis, in Coburg Street. Buried in Grafton Cemetery. Third row below Hobson's tomb and a little nearer Grafton Bridge. Eliza Hargreaves immigrated to arrived Wellington 21 apr 1840 on the Bolton on 19 November 1839.
