M, #39186, b. about 1810
Biography
William (TYRELL) (SPIKE) Spyke was born about 1810 in ENG.
1 I noted in a book I have in my family history box called 'Coastal Traders of the 'Forties' - A Forgotten Chapter in the Early (1840's) History of Whanganui' By Morris N Watt.
Mention of a William Spyke coming before the judge in Wellington in the Wanganui Petty Sessions January 23 1844, and the judge remembered him coming before him in the court in England but his surname was Tyrell there.
He got off but got convicted again a few weeks later. Liz B

WANGANUI PETTY SESSIONS,
January 23, 1844. Joseph Jones, a farm servant of Mr. Ball's, complained that William Spyke had stabbed him with a clasp knife. It appeared that Jones was in the Wanganui Tavern, when Spyke came in, who was somewhat intoxicated.
There was some chaffering about razors and knives which Spyke wished to sell. Jones asked Spyke to give him a knife that was hanging from his neck, meaning to let him.examine it. "Yeah" says Spike, "I'll give it you." and immediately struck it with force into Jones' body. The knife was dagger shaped ; the catch was weak it met with resistance, and half-closed, else the wound would have been serious. The prisoner was committed.
