Fatal Accident.-lt is our painful duty to record the sudden death of Mr" James Anderson, aged 28 years, of the Caledonian Hotel Fort-street, (a man who was respected by all who knew him,) under the following lamentable circumstances. On Friday Evening, about eight o'Clock it was blowing very fresh in our ' harbour and Mr. Anderson's boat got adrift; a young man who assisted to recover the boat, gave the following account to the Chief Police Magistrate, who (in the absence of the Coroner) enquired into the matter. " That on Friday night about dusk Mr. Anderson's boat was dragging on the beach in front of the Public House, I told him of it, we bothof us went off in a small dingy to the boat, by this time the boat was getting on the rocks, we pushed her off and she drifted round Soldiers' Point, we had to push her off twice more ; the water was too deep to stand and the last time we slipped into the water as she went off, so suddenly, and both of us held on to the boat side ; the dingy had been made fast to the boat, which was drifting fast down the harbour; after about five minutes Mr. Anderson said, he could hold on no., longer ; I contrived to get into the dingy but it swamped with me, I then tried to get into the boat but could not in consequence of the weight of my clothes ; Mr. Anderson got along the Gunwale of the boat by his hands, and got hold of the dingy, I hailed a boat I saw, belonging to one Coyle, but could not make the men hear as it was blowing very hard ; when I looked round again I lost sight of Mr. Anderson, and I did not see him again ; I hung on by the bob-stay, when opposite Judge's Bay, I contrived to get into the boat, the boat drifted over to the North Head where I got on shore, the boat was entirely dashed to pieces; I went to Captain Brown's house and stayed there till the next morning. Samuel Duncan, boatman, employed in Mr. Porter's barge, said, as I was walking round Soldier's Point about 10 o'clock, this morning, (Saturday) at low water, a man named Peterson, who was a-head found the body of the deceased, I was not near Peterson who first called a man named Sladden who was working at Captain Rough's ; when I came up to them they were close by the deceased who was lying. in the mud on his face, we put him on the rocks. Dr. Conway, said, I was called to see Mis. Anderson, and while there the corpse was brought in, I examined it,, the head was much disfigured, there were no marks of violence, the eyes, lips, and part of the neck had been eaten by fish,
there can be no doubt that he came to his death by drowning. The Police Magistrate and every one who saw the body were perfectly satisfied that deceease.i met his death hy accident. On Monday last the funeral of the deceased took place; a sreat number of the most respectable inhabitants of Auckland followed his remains to the grave ; indeed i( we except the funeral of our late Governor we do not recollect to have, witnessed any other, so numerously and respectably attended. James Anderson was a publican, Caledonian Hotel, Fort Street from 1842 to 1844.

1 PPA New Zealand Herald and Auckland Gazette 17 Jul 1841
Accident in the River.?We regret to record the almost certain loss of Cornelius Ryan, a line young man, (lately the Governor's coxwain [coxswain]), but better known by the name of Harris. On the 3rd instant, he went towards the mouth of the river in a boat, to look (as is believed), for another boat, then missing. The night was stormy; and, as he did not return on the next day, considerable apprehensions were entertained for his safety. The cutter of the Harbour-Master was despatched, but returned without success, as regarded Ryan, or his boat. They, however, discovered another boat, swamped, with the sails set, reefed. She has since been got up by the Harbour-Master and his crew, with considerable exertion, and now lies at the Dock Yard Reserve, in Official Bay. This boat is supposed to have belonged to a man, named Tnrtley [Turtley], who had gone on a trading trip, and it is feared, has perished, as well as poor Ryan.
