The Howes were assisted immigrants to the New Zealand Company settlement at
Wellington. They arrived in New Zealand at Port Nicholson on 17 February 1842 on
the ship Clifton. Clifton, of 820 tons, sailed from Isle of Wight on 3rd October 1941,
(2nd October Gravesend) with some 283 souls, the emigrants having embarked on 28th
September 1841 at Blackwell. The Howes were accompanied by their close relatives
the Maces, Amos Mace being Elizabeth?s brother and Catherine Mace the sister of
John.

brief obituary, NZ Times, Wednesday 23 May 1877:
?The funeral of the late Mr. J. Howe took place yesterday, and was largely
attended. Mr Howe was one of the oldest settlers here. He came out in the ship
?CLIFTON? and brought up a large family of sons and daughter, all of whom
married and settled well. He was always a steady, honest and good colonist and
was generally respected. He leaves 86 grandchildren.? John Howe had person sources.
