Richard emigrated to New Zealand with his father Robert and his step mother Ann Hammnd, (his mother, was Alice Dring) and 5 siblings on the LADY NUGENT leaving Gravesend on 10th October 1840 and arriving on the 17th March 1841.
His future wife, Anne Collier was also on the ship, aged 13, with her parents and 7 siblings... He was to marry her 6 years later when he was 23 and she was 20. They had 12 (known) children.

CORONER'S INQUEST.
An inquest was held before J. Fii;zgeraldi Coroner, on the, body of Henry Sutherland. 4 It appears from the evidence of Richard Robinson and Edward Bowler, that the decease^ met his death in the praiseworthy attempt to save a child belonging to a Mrs. Parker, whic^ had accidently fallen into the river Waiwetui Botn Robinson and Bowler exerted themselves to the utmost, but on the body being drawn into the punt, life was extinct. The child was saved. Verdict. ? Death from drowning. Richard Robinson had person sources.
