Thanks for the additional information, it certainly helps to confirm quite a few details on my tree. I am happy to open the tree to anyone who would like to have a look through it. Additionally I would love to have a look at what other people have achieved on the family in New Zealand. The bulk of the family in England (until the 1900s o so) have left remarkedly few records or information for future generations apart from some records of naval service or criminal convictions. If the family in NZ have left wills then they will provide written links to the 1850s and onwards. They would be most valuable additions to the family tree and help to keep people from times past "alive".

Recently, I had my genes tested to find out what my haplogroup is. A colleague that I work (also a Gilbert from the same area of Devon)with had his tested and the results turned to be the same. Apparently, we share an unusual marker that is so far only seen on our line. Tracking our respective trees back, we have found that our common ancestor is probably Martin Gilbert, born 1710 in Clawton Devon. It is highly probable that all direct male Gilbert lines that descend from Martin will also possess the same unique marker and Haplogroup type. I wonder if any of the direct male descendents of Henry Gilbert and Catherine Putt in New Zealand also possess the same Haplotype and marker as me and my colleague. Do you think that any Gilbert males in NZ would be interested in having their genes tested to establish their heritage? I'd be fascinated to discover any NZ Gilberts who share my genes. He was an agricultural labourer in 1841.²
