William Kilgour and his wife Mary (nee Duess) came to NZ on the Jane Gifford in 1842. With them were their children Ann 18, John 16, Martha 13 Mary 10 (but the shipping record states 12), William 8 and Thomas 4. They
had one further child Lavinia after their arrival in New Zealand, born in 1843. William Kilgour Snr was born, we think, in Raphoa, Donegal, Ireland in 1801and Mary was born circa 1802. William & Mary settled in Huia West, Auckland. According to historian Jack Diamond, Foster Bay (next to Huia Bay) was original named Kilgour Bay but we are unsure as to which Kilgour this was named after. William taught his young boys the skills of the bush and of pit-sawing. When Cornwallis collapsed in June 1843 the family stayed on as there was enough wood and Kauri gum to trade for the goods they needed. Thomas Kilgour (later Killgour) was the manager of one of the main timber companies (Kauri Timber Company) in the Thames area in 1870-1890's. Thomas was also a councillor in Thames. The family have a connection with the sinking of HMS Orpheus in that some of the sailors came ashore at the family homestead of Cornwallis and three sailors are buried in the family graveyard.
