Auckland, January 4,
"One of our oldest colonists, Mr Joseph Newman, died to-day, aged 77. He arrived in the .ship James in April 1841, and had endured all the vicissitudes of a settler's lot. He was at one time a member of tbe General Assembly
for Franklyn.' A large number of 40-acre immigrants were introduced by him when acting for tho Provincial Government as immigration agent in 1860-2. Mr Newman was a great friend of the temperance reform, and stood as a candidate on the prohibition ticket at tho last licensing election. Eighteen months ago, a signboard fell during a gale and struck Mr Newman on the head. He never completely recovered from the shock.
