Known as Wesley. First lived in New Zealand as a child in Hokianga, arrived 28/4/1836 departed 23/8/1839.
Arrived again in N.Z. 1854 as accountant for the Union Bank of Australia, Lyttelton & later opened the Bank of N.S.
W. Christchurch in May 1861. In 1863 he purchased a half share in the business of J.T.Peacock and Company with
Mr Beaver (aka. Beverley) Buchanan. Company was initially very successful but became bankrupt in the recession
of 1867. Started in business again on his own account and prospered.
One of the founders and in 1873, first London agent/manager for NZ Shipping Co. Ltd. Auctioneer, merchant and
shipowner, office 150 Worcester St. Christchurch City councilor. Owned several sailing ships, warehouses and
flour mills and traded world wide. Reversal of fortune in the depression of the late 1880s. Rebuilt his business as
N.Z. agent for Blackball Coal Company. Nick-name CWT or "Hundredweight Charlie". Methodist lay preacher.
Built and resided in a large house on 10 acres named 'Fassifern', Papanui Rd. Merivale, Christchurch which
remained in the family until 1940s. After his second marriage lived at 249 North Belt [Bealey Ave.] Christchurch,
with his wife and their 2 children while the rest of the family lived at 'Fassifern'.
DEATH: Flags on port of Lyttelton buildings and ships in harbour flown at half mast on his death. Buried in
graveyard at St. Pauls Anglican Church, Papanui, Chch. with his wife Emily Iredale, who died 13/10/1881 aged 44
yrs. and his daughter Adeline Mary Turner, d.19/6/1938 aged 78 yrs. In the same grave site near the Harewood
Rd. entrance. Also buried in the St.Pauls graveyard are his children: Adeline, Edith, Kassie, Kenneth, Clarence
(and wife Augusta), Arthur (and wife Ethel), Edgar (and wife Amy). Also buried there are William Hannibal Lane
and Emily's sister Alice Lane and three of their boys. Charles Wesley Turner was baptized on 4 May 1834 in Hobart, TAS, AUS.
