OBITUARY
MRS ELLEN BIRKETT CAME TO COLONY IN 1841. One of the oldest pioneers of Now Zealand, Mrs Ellen Birkett, who came to New Zealand in 1841, with her parents, died in Wellington last Thursday at the age of 95. After her marriage she lived many years in Taranaki. She is survived by ,six children, 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Ellen Hart was born on 30 Jan 1837 in Maidstone, Kent, England to parents Edward Hart and Sarah Culley.
She immigrated to New Zealand with her family arriving on 9 Aug 1841 in Wellington, New Zealand.
"On 10 July 1853 Ellen gave birth to Margaret Elizabeth Hart, probably at her parents home at Webb Street in the inner city suburb Te Aro in Wellington. The first name of the child was not registered, but the last name was given as ?Hart? and the fathers first name given as ?William?. Five months later on 5 December 1853 Ellen married Edward Birkett (1833-1902) at her parent?s Wellington home. Ellen was aged just 15 and Edward 21 years of age. Edward was baptised at Wouldham in Kent on 13 October 1833. He and his parents Benjamin Birkett and Martha Jane Burkett (née Hogg) arrived in New Zealand on board the Slains Castle on 25 January 1841." [1]

She died on 29 Aug 1929 at age 92 in Opunake, South Taranaki, Taranaki, New Zealand.
