PPA New Zealand Herald, Volume XXXV, Issue 10776, 10 June 1898, Page 6
The Rev. William and Mrs. Kirk, of Petone, celebrated their golden wedding the other day, having been married on June 6, 1848. The marriage ceremony took place at the Central Mission Station, Hokianga, at a time when there was considerable trouble with the natives. Their first experience of married life was not of the pleasanvest, being buffeted about in a small schooner when on then" way from Auckland to found a new mission in the Wanganui district. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk were more than a month at sea, and experienced the peculiar sensation occasioned by the big earthquakes that .took place at that time. The schooner was ultimately wrecked at the mouth of the Wangatmi River. After being most hospitably treated by the Wanganui people the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk started a mission near Pipirilri, 80 miles up the Wanganui River. For more than a year they lived in a dwelling without a Horn, built of palings and wheat straw, with a roof thatched with toi-toi. This mansion was built by the Maoris at a week's notice for their convenience, After labouring some four and a-half years in that district they removed to Waikouaiti, in the Otago district, where they took up missionary work. Some time after their work ther? was finished the Rev. Mr. Reestablished and carried on a Maori industrial school at KaiIwi. It was a most successful undertaking ; the school accommodated some 50 boarders, who were taught farming, trades, and what not. ' This laudable scheme was given up on the outbreak of the Hauhau war, and, Mrs. Kirk's health failing, they went to Mangonui, Bay' of Islands. Subsequently the rev. gentleman took up English circuits, and laboured, among other places, at Nelson (twice), Wellington, Christehurch, New Plymouth, and Auckland, retiring in 1884. ! The Rev. Mr. and Mrs Kirk, who still enjoy excellent health, have children and grand- ; children in different parts of the colony, Mr. ' R." C. Kirk, Mayor of Petone, being a son. ? Mrs. Kirk, it might be mentioned, is a native ) of New Zealand, laving been born at the ' Bay of Islands. Her father, the Rev. Mr. ' Hobbs, was one of the pioneer missionaries ' who arrived in the colony in 1823. i. William (Rev) Kirk immigrated to to Auckland in 1848.1 He was a missionary, Wanganui in 1848.6

Began whaling at age 18. first for LOVETT,, Kapiti Island then was bay whaling for Johnny JONES at Waikouaiti for several years then to Jacobs River 1838 or 1839. (manager)
1842 HOWELL joined by his stepfather ( STEVENS) and 6 of his family RR2
Re John Howell: briefly - he was born, possibly in Fairlight in Sussex, on 25 Jan 1810, and baptised in Eastbourne on 8 Jul 1810, the son of William HOWELL (or HOWLE) and Mary née COLLINS. He was an adventurous lad and ran away to sea on more than one occasion, at least once being restored to his family. His father died before 1817 as his mother, a widow, married George STEVENS on 10 Oct that year.
John ended up in Australia, having, so the story goes, stowed away and being made to work his passage when discovered. He was probably in his early teens as it is thought he arrived about 1824.
About 1828 he found work with Captain Lovett, a not-very-nice boss, and he is also reported as having worked at Twofold Bay but the Whaling Station there wasn't founded until 1828. Maybe there was some activity there a little earlier. Somewhere along the line he attained his First Mate's Ticket and then about 1829 or 1830 he met Johnny Jones. All these dates are rather vague as there is no documentary proof - or at least none that I've heard of.
There is a record (shipping lists somewhere I think) that he was in command of the "Trial" and later the "Eliza". All this was before Johnny Jones sent him to look for a site for a whaling/sealing station in the south of South Island NZ.
His story is told in a book by Eva WILSON that you probably know of - it has a maori title. PB
DNZB has that two sons died in Otago 1874. Not sure which ones these were.

1835 set up whaling station at Jacob's River, Riverton for Johhny JONES.
1836 introduced rabbits to Southland. EWI
27 jan 1841 witness to marriage James SPENCER and Meri KAURI BDMWESOTAGO. John (Capt) Howell was baptized on 8 July 1810 in Eastbourne, Sussex, ENG.1 He immigrated to from England to Australia and then to Kapiti Island, NZ, 1828, about 1827.1 He was a whaler, trader in 1827.1 He was an established whaling station for Johnny JONES, Jacobs River, Foveaux Strait, SI in 1835.1,13,12 He was a whaler Bluff in 1843.3 He was a farmer, politician in 1850.1
