John is one of only a few who paid for his own passage, as the majority
were assisted with their passage as victims of clearance. The family
information is recorded in different forms on various web sites
including:
Nicholson, John - Inverness boat builder s.o (son of) Angus and
Euphemia McLennon
Catherine 24, Sutherland d.o. (daughter of) John Murry r &w (read and
write)
Euphemia, twin boys 41/2, Catherine 21/2
Also that John was aged 29, that his religion was Presbyterian, he
travelled 'on his own account' with his wife Catherine 24, 2 daughters
and 1 son! ( There are Scottish parish records of a marriage between a
John Nicolson and Catherine Murray in 1832 in Wick, Caithness,
Scotland. They had 2 daughters Euphemia b 1833, Catherine b.1836 and a
son Robert Horsburgh Nicolson b.1838, all in Tongue, Sutherland).
The family 'story/myth' was that John Nicolson (often spelt Nicholson)
had paid for a return voyage, and had gone out to Sydney as a surveyor
to meet Hobson who was about to carry out a land survey of New
Zealand..... I can find no evidence of this though!
All I do know is that John Nicholson, a ship and boat builder, was
living in Auckland by 1841. His son Angus was born in Auckland in 1842,
and the family are recorded in various 'Early NZ Settlers' records
including:
Auckland Police Census 1841-1845 :
John Nicholson, Status: Owner of Property, Occupation: Boatbuilder
Auckland Jury List 1849
Nicholson, John boatbuilder, albert st
Jury Services 1851-52
Nicholson, J., Ship and boat builder, Albert Street
The New Zealander 9th April 1849 (Applications for renewed licences)
Nicholson, John Black Bull Albert Street
'The Auckland Alphabetical Directory 1866'
Nicholson, John, Ship and Boat builder, living in Albert Street and
Nicholson and Son, Ship and boat builders, Albert St"
