OBITUARY.
MR. ROBERT CRAIG. A member of one of the old pioneering families of Auckland, Mr. Robert Craig, died in a private hospital this morning. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. Joseph Craig, who arrived in Auckland by the Jane Gifford in 1842. He was born at the island of Kawau on June 3, 1831. Serving his time as a shipwright and boatbuilder, he worked for a time as a journeyman at the various shipyards when Auckland was coming into prominence as the centre where many famous Island traders were launched. In 1877 Mr. Craig left for Fiji under engagement to Messrs. Henderson and Mae far Line, the well-known Auckland shipping firm, and at Levuka he supervised their extensive Island plant. He was also actively engaged at the building of the infant township of Suva, which displaced Levuka as the capital after the Fiji group of islands had been declared a British Crown colony in 1874. Working for the Government and private firms for some years, Mr. Craig returned to Auckland in 1898, working for several of the leading firms on the waterfront. He had lived in retirement for many years, but his interest in shipping and aquatic matters had been maintained throughout his life, and he never missed an Anniversary Day regatta when in Auckland. As the result of a fall at his home a fortnight ago he took to his bed suffering from shock, from which lie never recovered. Mr. Craig was never married, but leaves a large number of relations, of whom Messrs. E. A. Craig, 11. R. Craig, and W. A. Craig are nephews. Mr. Arthur Rosser is also a nephew by marriage. The funeral will take place at Purewa to-morrow afternoon. Robert Craig was a ship wright on 4 April 1875.1
