2,4 OBIT
The news of the death of Cyrus Goulter, which took place at Hawkesbury at one o'clock this morning, will be received with regret by all, though hardly with surprise, as it has been known for a considerable time that his health has not been good. Deceased was 66 years of age, and was born near Bath, England. He landed in Nelson on February Ist, 1841, and since then has resided continuously in and about this district. He and Mr Joseph Ward, sen., were joined together as surveyors, and worked in both Nelson and Marlborough, having under Mr Budge done the most of the work in surveying this district in 1847. In 1849 Mr Goulter married the fourth daughter of Mr H. Redwood of Nelson, and a short time prior to that had commenced sheep farming in Marlborough. Though in his later years Mr Goulter did not take part in politics, those who knew him in the days of Provincialism will well recollect that he took a prominent part in the Provincial politics of those times, and had the unique honor of holding a post of importance in or under each Government that was formed. After Provincial Governments were done away with Mr Goulter held the office of sheriff for many years, and his retirement from that position some ten years ago marked the period at which his connection with public affairs may be said to have ceased. It was not however in politics and local Government alone that the deceased gentleman did good work in his day, but as a breeder of sheep he has earned honors not only in Marlborough but outside. Assisted by his sons he has paid attention to the improvement of his stud stock of merinos till today there are few better, and the service thus rendered will be of lasting benefit to the district as tending to improve the status of the sheep grown in Marlborough. Deceased leaves behind him three daughters? Mrs Austin Ward, Mrs Peter Trolove, and one in the Convent at Wellington, and two sons ? Messrs Chas. and Redwood Goulter. Three years ago he married again, the lady on this occasion being Miss Trolove, by whom he leaves one daughter.[5]. Cyrus Goulter immigrated to arrived Nelson 1 feb 1842 on the Fifeshire on 26 September 1841.
1 He was a surveyor in 1842.
2 He was a farmer, politician, commissioner of crown lands in 1845.
