Henry Millar
M, #16411, d. 17 March 1923
Biography
Henry Millar and
Elizabeth Voller were married on 1 March 1872 in Richmond, Nelson, NZ. He died on 17 March 1923 in Nelson, NZ. He was buried on 16 March 1923 in Wakapuaka, Nelson - family plot.
Henry Millar was in occupation - Mariner. Barbara - we have him buried the day before he dies!!
Henry Millar was in the Navy but no definite records have been found. He was a Captain or 1st Mate and worked on boats in and out of Nelson. Anchor Shipping Co of Nelson was tried for confirmation but all their records had been destroyed in a fire.
Henry retired when he was injured on board a ship and ended up in a wheelchair.
In a letter from Vonda Rutherford nee Millar she says that Grandpa Millar used to sit in a chair on the back porch. He had a white beard. Granny was very strict and the children of William H. Millar were not encouraged to visit their grandparents. She also thought Grandpa Millar was a Mate on the Ferry (so much for being a Captain).
Not able to locate death on BD&M - how old was he when he died?? Found 1923/3356 Miller Henry 78Y. 1872/3332 Elizabeth VOLLER - no groom recorded.
Elizabeth Voller
F, #16412, b. 1 September 1848, d. 30 May 1939
Parents
Biography
Elizabeth Voller was born on 1 September 1848 in Tasmania, Australia. She and
Henry Millar were married on 1 March 1872 in Richmond, Nelson, NZ. She died on 30 May 1939, at age 90, in Nelson, NZ. She was buried on 31 May 1939 in Wakapuaka, Nelson - family plot.
So far, there is no proof that Elizabeth Voller was born in Tasmania, so it maybe incorrect to assume that she was. Shirley Turkington did search the Wellington records under several versions of the Voller surname but no joy.
James Marsh, her step-father, transferred his property in Francis Street, Makoktuku purchased on 23 May 1887 to Elizabeth on Dec 1908.
Found marriage record for Elizabeth Voller - no Groom 1872/3332
Barbara - is this house were the photo of the Millar kids and the sheep was taken?? 1872/3332 Elizabeth VOLLER - no groom recorded.
Mary Ann Voller
F, #16413, b. about 1830
Parents
Biography
Mary Ann Voller was born about 1830. She and
Hugh Douglas were married NO RECORDS FOUND. She and
Samuel Voller were married no records found. She and
James Marsh were married on 21 May 1850 in St Peters Church, Wellington, New Zealand.
Notes from Shirley Turkington - 24 Feb 1988
Mary Ann arrived with her parents and sisters in 1843.
Daughter Elizabeth was born in 1846 when she would have been approximately 16 years old, father is thought to have been Samuel VOLLER (possible cousin!)
A copy of her marriage certificate to James MARSH on 21 May 1850 has her surname recorded as VELLAR and she signed with an "x". As it appears she could not write, she probably couldn't read so would not have known that her name was spelt differently. Her older sister, Elizabeth Lucas is a witness to the marriage and also signed with an "x".
Her second daugher, Mary Jane, was born April 1850, with the father recorded as James MARSH.
Notes from Barbara (Jan 2004) .Reading an old letter from Mona Lamplough. She reckoned Mary Ann died in Makotuku, but we still have the Salvation Army 1908 theory. Also that Mary Ann had an alcohol problem.
I have a Mary Ann Marsh died 3 Oct. 1911, Napier Cemetery, buried 6 Oct 1911 age 76yr (bit young) but then most relations don't always know much about age at time of death.
However, in a letter from Mona Lamplough, Winifred Mona daughter. she thinks Mary Ann ended her days in The Salvation Army Home, Island Bay, Wellington about 1908. But was she Mrs Marsh or Mrs Douglas nee Voller. The land in Makotuku was transferred to Elizabeth Millar from James Marsh on 12 Dec. 1908. I know Shirley T. looked into possible death notices but didn't come up with anything. And Mona L. was the one who put me on to the Makotuku connection.
Notes from Barbara (Feb 2004)
There is some question as to whether they (the girls, Elizabeth, Mary Anne & Jane) were christened as Voller or Warner. Seems to be some tie up with the Warner family, who also came from Ore at the same time on board the "Olympus"
A Sarah Ann Voller was present at the death of Elizabeth Warner 1851 at Ore. Elizabeth was being the likely mother of Richard and Eliza Warner who went to N.Z. Richard Warner also fought in the Wairau massacre at Nelson.
Going by the baptism dates it would put Elizabeth older at 15yr and Jane 8yr at time of arrival in N.Z. Mary Ann is okay.
Found BD&M 1871/3501 Mary Ann VOLLER - no groom recorded, not sure if this is relevant so recording for now. Have photocopy of original certificate - James Marsh, Wellington, Bachelor and Mary Ann VELLAR, Wellington, Spinister were married in St Peter's Church with consent of parents on 21 May 1850. James signed his name but Mary Ann marked with an "x". Elizabeth Lucas, sister of the bride was one of the witnesses, the other one I am unable to read. No records have been found for the marriage of Mary Ann to Hugh Douglas - this is assumed to be because James Marsh was still alive. Mary Ann Voller was christened on 5 December 1830 in Ore, Hastings, Sussex, England.

Notes from Shirley TURKINGTON
Robert LUCAS applied for a free passage to emigrate to New Zeland on 16 April 1842, no 5514. He was granted but paid for his own fare, one of the very few emigrants who did. His address on his application was 17 Bishop Street, Bristol. Aged 25, he sailed on the "Thomas Harrison" which left Gravesend 26 May 1842 and arrived in Nelson on 25 October 1842.
Robert married Elizabeth VOLLER in Nelson in the Wesleyan Chapel on 12 May 1844 by the Rev. John ALDRED
Robert must have changed his occupation several times as on his emigration papers he is an ironmonger, on the 1844 Nelson census, a boatman, on the 1856 Wellington Electorial Roll, a clerk and on his death certificate he was an Agent and Auctioneer.
Robert and ELizabeth left Nelson about 1845 and lived in Tory Street, Wellington. Elizabeth was still there in 1858 when their youngest child, Robert John was born but Robert must have gone to Greytown about 1856 to look around and decided to buy land there then and move his family over later as he is mentioned as having owned land there in 1856 in Baganlls "Early Wairarapa".
After Elizabeth died in 1861, Robert married Jane Isabell THOMAS (Nee GREATHEAD), a widow, and had two more children with her. After he died in 1877, she must have gone to live in Australia as the Freeholders of NZ 1882 gives her address as both Sydney and Melbourne.
Notes from Barbara:
Arrived in Nelson on the "Thomas Harrison" in 1842 aged 25, single. Married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Voller at Nelson 1844-45 and by the 1850 Nelson Census they had a daughter and son. They moved to Wellington sometime in 1850 and by 1856 to Taurerenikau Block, Featherson. Elizabeth died in 1861 in Greytown and Robert in 1877 aged 60, in Greytown. Robert remarried at 52 to Jane Isabell (or Isobel Jane) THOMAS (nee GREATHEAD) and had two more children with her.
Robert's his father's name was recorded as Samuel LUCAS, merchant, on his death certificate.
Robert's widow may have gone to Australia as in the Freeholders of New Zealand 1882 have her address listed as both Sydney and Melbourne. Robert signed his name but Elizabeth signed with an "x"
Rev. John Aldred married them in the Wesleyan Chapel.
Information sourced from Methodise Church headquareters, Hereford & Manschester St, Christchurch. Robert Lucas was an ironmonger in 1842.
