OTHER COMMENTS

Entry in a Dannevirke Newspaper to say that a JAMES MARSH was buried 22 Dec 1913. The article said he was a widower with a stepdaughter in Nelson (Elizabeth Millar) and thought he was an army man.

This raises some questions ..

If this person was our James, then Mary Ann must have already been dead. Also never known that he was an army man. Also where did he go after 185- when he married Mary Ann until he turned up at Makatuku??

Query from Barbara (Jan 2004)...
Found an entry in my notes for a J. Marsh left Wellington for Kaikora on the "Emma Jane" on 8 May 1851. Thought at first that I had written Kaikora wrong, but have since found out that Kaikora is in Hawkes Bay and was the old name for Otane. Was this our J Marsh?

I noticed in the 1903 Waipawa Electorate rolls included Dannevirke, Norsewood, Makotuku, and Ormondville. 1903 James and Mary Marsh at Makotuku. Also a Joseph Marsh and his wife Mary Ann lived at Ormondville. Also a school teacher name Mary Ann Marsh in the same area. Just something to think about.

Thinking about the birth of Jeremiah Marsh born 6 Dec 1847. He was baptised on 9 Jan 1848 Wtgn at the same time as 2 Lucas children. Could this be a connection to Elizabeth Lucas (Voller). her 2 chn could have been Amelia b. 1845 and George b. 1847. Never heard any more about a Jeremiah. Perhaps he died young. The Cert said his father was James Marsh, ropemaker and mother Ann Marsh. Perhaps we should look for a death cert.

Though I would do a date list, which Shirley used to do to try to sort things out. Here goes.

James signed his name but Mary Ann marked with an "x". Elizabeth Lucas, sister of the bride was one of the witnesses, the other one I am unable to read.

Sarah Ann Lucas was born in 1848. She and William John Haines Hauses were married on 14 December 1876 in Wellington, NZ. She died in 1940, at age ~92, in NZ.

++ Barbara - Shirley didn't have Sarah down on the family tree that I was checking from - any ideas as to why??
BD&M reference: 1940/15218 aged 92 - three Sarah LUCAS found in search, this one only one matched birth year so may not be correct. Can not locate birth, found some of her siblings registered but no parents recorded with them.

Notes from Shirley - unnamed son from birth notices in "Early Wellington" Born 24 July 1854. The date matches the birth record found for Elizabeth Fanny so I have changed it to her.
