PASSING OF A PIONEER
DEATH OF CAPTAIN PREECE. VETERAN OF THE MAORI WAR. It is with very deep regret that we announce the passing of one of Palmerston North?s most prominent citizens and one of the beet known Maori War veterans in New Zealand ?Captain George. Augustus Preece, whose death occurred at his late 'residence, 49 Fitzherbert street, at 3 o?clock this morning. It was in December, 1892, that lib" came to Palmerston North and until eighteen months ago ho had been actively engaged in the business life of the community. His long residence in the town had won for him the esteem and respect of a large circle of friends, who will sincerely mourn the passing of a good and true friend and a brave soldier.
Captain Preece?s career was a most interesting His father. Mr Janies Preece, who was born at Hereford, England. came to New Zealand as a missionary under the Rev. Samuel Marsden, in February, 1831, landing at Paihia. in the Bay of Islands. It was two years later that he married Miss Mary Ann Williams, of Clifton, England, who was also a missionary, at Keri Kcri, Bay of Islands, this being the second marriage of white people be celebrated in New Zealand. The late Captain Preece was born on November 6, 1845, at Coromandel. At the age of 17 he was appointed interpreter to the English forces, being a very fine Maori linguist, one of' the best in New Zealand. In the East Coast campaign be was attached to Colonel James Eraser?s forces?consisting of Hawke's Bay military settlers, Colonial Defence Force, Forest Rangers and Taranaki military settlers ? as interpreter with the ran If* of ensign on tile'- staff, from August, 1865. to tho latter end of 1867 At this time lie was also holding an appointment in the Civil Service in conjunction with his military dules, and served in the field at the East Const. Poverty Bay, Wairoa and Napier districts. He was present at all the principal engagements against the rebel natives during that period. In July, 1868, on Te Kooti's escape from the Chatham Islands, ho was again attached to the forces as ensign, and served in several expeditions and engagements, and was mentioned in despatches After the Poverty Bay massacre in November, 1868. lie was appointed lieutenant in command of the Wairoa Native Contingent, and accompanied Major Ropata to Poverty Bay, and was present at the taking of the enemy?s position at Makarelu and at the first attack on Ngatnpa, and was mentioned in despatches bv Colonel Whitmore and afterwards awarded the New Zealand Cross for this service. The cross, which is regarded as the most rare and distinguished military decoration in the world, was substituted by Queen Victoria for the V.C. Colonel Whitmore?s words when he recommended the Cross's bestowal on Captain Preece were: ?For personal bravery when attached to Major Ropata as interpreter at the first attack on Ngatapa. J 1 is behaviour was so brilliant as- to elicit the admiration of Major Ropata, who, on the day following, recommended him for special reward, with the complimentary remark that with two or three men like Preece he would have broken into the pah.? Captain Preece served under Colonel (afterwards General) Whitmore through the East and West Coast and Urewcra campaigns of 1868 and 1869. being mentioned in despatches, and also served under Colonels Herrick and Mac Donnell in Taupo and Tapapa, where he was mentioned three times in despatches and was promoted to the rank of captain in February of 1876. lie commanded the Native Contingent in tho Urewcra country in many expeditions from April, 1870, to May, 1872. when Te Kooli finally escaped into the King Country with only nine followers, the last engagement having been fought at Mangaonc, near Lake Waikaremoana. Captain Preece again received the special thanks of the Government.
In 1873 he was appointed sub-inspector in the Armed Constabulary Forth, and remained in .that force until May of 1877, when he was re-appointed to the Civil Service, retaining rank in the New Zealand Militia to the time of his death. On the conclusion of tho troublous Maori War days, Captain Preece was appointed to tho judicial department at Wairoa, Hawke?s Bay; laier he was Magistrate at Opotiki, Bay of Plenty, and also at Napier for twelve years, and later, for a number of years, at Christclufrch. He retired in 1883. , .
Thirty-three years back be arrived in Palmerston North, where lie remained up to the time of his death, and during all those years lie contributed, by bis foresight and energy, much to the progress and welfare of this now thriving town. Hydro-elec-tricity was one thing he always took a tremendous interest in ; indeed, he was one of its first advocates in Palmerston North. He had pamphlets published concerning it. and pushed forward the work when ,in its infancy. Very invaluable help and advice he gave to Mr Evan Parry, chief electrical engineer before Mr Birks. Captain Preece was also for many years an active member of (he Chamber of Commerce.
It is interesting to recall that he was one of tho last remaining godsons of George Augustus Selwyn, the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. Ho leaves a family of three daughters and two sons. One of his sons was killed at Gallipoli in the historic action on August 8. 1915. ? The funeral, which will be military in character, will cave deceased?s late residence in Fitzherbert street at 1.15 p.m. on Monday for All Saints? Church, and thence to the Palmerston North, cemetery.
