A pakeha JLHK
Possibly James KEMP jnr TAGU
"I am doing some family history and am interested in the information you compiled and is found on nzearlyhistory.com. It mentions that Mere Marmon (who is my great great great great grandmother) married Hemi and that he was a pakeha. We believe that to probably be James Kemp (Hemi Keepa) who was the son of James Kemp who was with the CMS in Kerikeri.
He was 2 years older then Mere at the time. The only other Hemi / Himi Keepa we could find at that time in New Zealand was a maori gentleman down in Wanganui and there is no information that links him to Northland around that time frame.
Mere had a daughter called Harata / Hariata which when translated to English is Charlotte. James Kemp's mother was Charlotte so this is why we believe that James was the father of Harata. I suppose it is possible that James' father who was also named James could be the father to Harata as well. Harata had a son named Hohepa Heperi and all he ever said of his grandfather is that he was a pakeha. We believe that it may have been a scandal that Mere and James had a child together because there is not much else mentioned about James and the James that we think may have been the father then married Sophia Lousia Davis in 1830.
