DEATH OF A PIONEER
CAPTAIN JOSEPH KENNEDY FORMERLY OF GISBORNE. Press- Association. GISBORNE, June 19. Captain Joseph Kennedy, who died at Auckland to-day, was one of the pioneers of Poverty Bay. He was the first pilot to the Gisborne Harbour Board, and originated tho lightering firm of Kennedy and Bennett, afterwards Kennedy and Evans, and finally disposed of to tho Sheepfarmers? Company, under whose guidance tho business has grown into tho considerable concern of to-day. Some years ago ho sold his property here and took up a farm at Papakura, near Auckland. He left that and returned to Gisborne, but took ill and went to Auckland for health reasons a month ago. The first -steam, tender, which served to set up commnnication of a kind between Gisborne and tbe outside world, was run by. Captain Kennedy for Captain Read. This was the little Nofca, called after Captain Road?s first wife, a native. _ Captain Kennedy was bom at Kennedy Bay, near Auckland, and worked with his father on the sea. His. father, who was a well-known figure in the early days, was murdered by natives while proceeding in a cutter from ' Kennedy?s Bay (named after Mr Kennedy, senior) to Auckland. The first that can be remembered of the veteran captain in Poverty Bay was when he ran the old schooner Rosina to Opotiki and Tauranga. _ . Deceased was first married to Mrs (Dr) Thomson, of Auckland, and by this marriage there wore four daughters and one son, all of whom are still alive. Tho family comprises Mrs Wells (Gisborne), Mrs George Smith (Peel street, Gisborne), Mrs Chovoaax (Gisborne), Mrs Williams (Sydney), and Mr Edward Kennedy (Wellington). Mrs Kennedy pre-deceased her husband man yyears ago, and twenty years ago he married again, his second wife being Miss Palmer, of Gisborne. Of this union there are five children (four girls and one boy), all living in Auckland. Deceased is survived by an elder brother, Mr John Kennedy, of Te Arai, and also by another brother, Mr Nathan Kennedy, of Opotiki.
