OBITUARY
. MR HUNTLY ELIOTT The death has occurred-at. Wellington of Mr Huntly John Harry Eliott, at one time a prominent member, ot the Public Service. He was born in, Auckland-in 1843, -and - was the eldest, son of Mr G. Eliot Eliott, one of New Zealand's first civil servants, who came to the country in 1838, landing at Russel). Mr Eliott- joined the Public Ser-! vice iu 1840, and his son, who was edu- j cated at' the. Wesleyan College. Auck- j land, became a clerk* in the Colonial 1 Secretary?s Department at Auckland, under the Stafford Government, in 1858. The Hon. W, Gisborne was then under-Secretaiy-of the department.. Mr Hugtly Eliott came:to Wellington when the seat of Government was transferred from Auckland, in 1866, 'and he remained with the Colonial Secretary?s Department until 1870. In that year a public works policy was' inaugurated, and a new department created to administer it. Mr Eliott was chief clerk in .that department. He was subsequently appointed Immigration Officer for Wellington district. In 1877 be became Under-Seoretary for Lands and lanmigraton, and later the administration of the Mines Department was also taken over by him. W?hen the Lands . and' Mines Departments were separated he remained Under-Sec--retary for Mines. He retired from tile service in; 1906, after 47 years? continuous work. The deceased, whowus a prominent Freemason, leaves a widow and three sons and four daughters, The funeral took place yesterday. .

MRS. MARY ELIOTT. An old .lady who was l)orn 5n Auckland in IS4R, Mrs. Mary Eliott, died at her residence. King Edward Parade, Devonport, on August 31, She was the youngest daughter of Captain J. Mitchell, of the 58th Regiment, who served in the war against Hone Heke in IS-J". and later in the Waikato in ISf.O. Miss Mitchell was married to the late Mr. Huntly Eliott, who was for many years Vnder-Seere-tary for Crown Lands and Mines. Most of Mrs. Eliott's married life was spent at Wellington, where the interment took place yesterday. Deceased is survived bv the following children: ? Messrs. Huntly Eliott. of Christchurch; George Eliott. of Auckland; Gordon Eliott. M.P. for Oroua: Mrs. Murison. Auckland; Mrs. Bucholz. Wellington: Mrs. Groves. Masterton; Mrs. Wheeler. Wellington. There are fourteen jrrandchildrr'ii and two great grandchildren, all born in New Zealand.
