DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
Mr. George E. Eliott,. a very old resident, dropped dead outside the Exchange this morning. Mr. Eliott formerly lived in Auckland. He was in the Colonial Secretary's Department in the forties, under the first Colonial Secretary (Hon. Andrew Sinclair), and for a long series of years was chief clerk. When the seat of Government was transferred to Wellington he retired on a pension, and, went with Mrs. Eliott to reside at Dunedin. One of his sons, Mr. Huntly; Eliott, is in the Civil Service at Wellington.

Mr George Eliot Eliott, of Dunedin, who died suddenly on the 17tb, at one time filled the responsible office of Secretary of the Post Office. He was one of the oldest living Civil servants in the colony, having received an appointment under Governor Hobson, before the proclamation of British soyereignty over these islands. He retired more than a quarter of a century ago, and divided his leisure bt£ween Dunedin and Nelson, which had for years been the home of his wife. He represented Leith Ward in the Dunedin City Council for a short time. Mr Eliott had several children, of whom the bestknown are Mr Huntley Eliott, Undersecretary for Mines, and Mr William George Eliott, for many years'an insurance agent in Dunedin.
