FIFTY YEARS MARRIED.
GOLDEN WEDDING TO-DAY.
SIR E. AND LADY MTTCHELSON.
An interesting anniversary will be observed to-day in the celebration of the golden wedding of Sir Ed'"in and Lady Mitchelson. Particular interest is attached to this anniversary by reason of the fact that the parents of both Sjr Edwin and bis wife were among the very earliest and best known of Auckland's pioneer settlers, whOe for nearly half a century past Sir Edwin has taken a leading part in the political, social, and business life of the community.
Sir Edwin's parents, Mr. and ? Mrs. Alexander Mitchelson. arrived at Kaipara from Sydney in the Hannah Watson in the year 1840. They remained in tha Ot&matea district until Messrs. Paul Wright And Co., of Sydney (in which firm Mr. W. S- Graham was a junioi partner), decided to establish their business in Auckland instead of the Kaipara, as was originally intended. Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Mitchelson thea removed to Auckland, when the business of W. S. Graham and Co. was established on the well-known site of Graham's Bond in Fort Street. The original building, which was built of wood, was destroyed by fire ia the early fifties. Mr Alexander Mitchelson remained in the service until his death, which occurred 35 years after he joined the firm. Sir Edwin Mitchelson was born en April 7, 1846, in a house somewhere near where the New Zealand Inscu-ance building now stands. In 1857 he Went I*. the Kajpara .and entered the service- ofrfce same firm in which his father was to long employed, for two ys?ars, when bs joined the late J. M. Darga villa. A few years later the latter disposed of hit business to Sir Edwin, who then established the business of E- Mitchelson and Brothers, of Dargaville. ? It was in the Wairoa that Sir Edwin first met Miss Sarah Wilson, to whom he was married 50 years ago to-day, at the old Wilson homestead at Awamufcu, Northern Wairoa, by the Rev. Frank Gould, who is still alive and in his 94th year. Miss Wilson's mother, Mrs. John Wilson, came to New Zealand in the same ship as Mr. and Mrs. Mitchelson, and died recently.at the advanced age of 97. | After living at Dargaville for 10 yeara Sir Edwii and Lady ilitchelson came to Aucklana in October, 1881. just after bur Edwin was elected to represent Marsden in the Parliament of New Zealand, and they have resided in Auckland ever since, for many years in Victoria Avenue, ind now at 108, Remuera Road. The family consisted of two soro and two daughters, those now living being Mrs. R. M- Wih eon and Mr. EP. Mitchelson. There are also three, grandchildren, A large number of congratulatory Tiessages have been received by Sir Edwin and Lady Mitchelson from friends throughout New Zealand.. The anniversary will be celebrated quietly as a family reunion at the beautiful Motutara homestead, on the West Coast.
