DEATH OF MR. THOS. RUNCIMAN, SENR.
Another old and respected settler has departed this life. In our issue of Thursday we briefly announced the fact of Mr. Thomas Runciman's death. That gentleman died on the morning of the 21st, at his residence on the Great South Road, after a short but pq.mful'illness of cancer in the mouth. Mr. Rdnoirhan 'left Selkirkshire, in Scotland, in March, 1839, arriving in Sydney in September of the same year. He aid not remain many months in- New South Wales, for in March, 1840, he arrived at the Bay of Islands, at which place he remained some twelve months and then settled at Wangarei. Heke's vpar in tfye North drove Mr. Bvmcinjw wife mMI-y 'other settlers from their farms, and he came up with the refugees, and remained m Auckland until 1860. In that year Mr. Runciman commenced farming at Drury, being the first European settler who attempted to reside; in that district. He lived i there till his death, and had : the gratification not only of seeing the district which he, as a backwoods pioneer, was the first to enter upon, become a tract of cultivated and smiling farms,but to have settled round him far and wide, sons and 'daughters' Tyho Hq.ve wok ifor'thetngelves independent and honourable positions among thepr fellovp colonists. Mr. Runciman died q,t'the ripe age of sixtyrfiye^Noy. Thomas Runciman immigrated to arrived Russell mar 1840 on the Nimrod in 1839.2 He was a carpenter, Wangarei in 1843.6

MR. WILLIAM BAKER. ? ' THAMES GOLDFIELD PIONEER. [BY TBT.EGBAPn.~-OWN correspondent.] " , THAMES." Friday. The death is announced of one of the old pioneers of the goldfield, Mr, William Baker, aged 75 years. Mr. Baker was born at Mangonui North in 1848, and arrived at Thames in 1868, where he has resided ever since. In the early days he followed the occupation of mine carpenter, and worked in that ? capacity in several of the principal mines here until bis appointment as manager of the Cambria mine in 1888, which position he held until the mine was exhausted. He was afterwards manager of several other wellknown mines, including the Saxon, Moanataiari and May Queen, and was retained by the Anglo Continental Company as advisory expert during the period of their operations in the district. He was a member of; the Hospital Board, the , Thames licensing bench and School of Mines Council, and has always taken a keen interest in public affairs. Ho leaves four sons, Messrs. W. H. Baker first assistant master, Thames High School, and formerly director of the School of Mines; S. G. Baker ; manager of the Moanataiari mine; H. J. Baker, accountant, Bank of New Zealand, Thames; and A. N. Baker, accountant of . the Bank of New Zealand, Oreymouth; fnd four daughters, Mrs. J. C. Beale arid Miss Mabel Baker, of Auckland; and Mrs. William Watson and Mian Olive Baker, of Thames.
